Ubicom - Embedded ICT 2007-2013

The Ubicom – Embedded ICT program run by Tekes is focused on developing and piloting embedded IT solutions. The area is expected to play a key role in the next stages of the development of IT, offering promising opportunities for business growth. In addition to the development of technology solutions and applications, the program also provides support for business development.

Ubicom, short for ubiquitous computing, refers to the integration of information processing capabilities into everyday objects and activities. The interaction with technology is often completely transparent: the processing takes place in the background, providing the users with added features and benefits.

A great example of ubiquitous computing is a regular modern car. Several embedded systems continuously manage safety, air conditioning and lightning, among others – all without driver involvement.

Ubiquitous computing is one of the most important trends in the ICT industry in the near future, expected to offer highly promising growth opportunities. However, ubiquitous technology is not only a promise. As an example, today’s embedded solutions tailored to suit customer needs may well become important drivers of a more ubiquitous world, once meshed together into widely networked systems.

The Ubicom program aims at improving Finland’s competitiveness internationally. The strong experience in electronics and data communications provides an excellent basis for the Finnish ICT industry to leverage the opportunities of ubiquitous computing, making it an important growth sector for the country’s economy.

The program is open for both private businesses and public research institutes. The program offers funding for technology and business development, encourages participants to network with key industry players, and provides a venue to impact the future of the industry.
