Project type:
Research project
Project status:
finished
Tekes' funding share:
168 188 €
Project summary:
Utilization of information and communications technologies in roadworks is a recent development even on a global scale. Blueprints created by 3D CAD applications can be transferred directly without delay to the construction site to assist in measurements and to control automated machinery. All the necessary measurements can be carried out using advanced 3D techniques.
- In applying the new technology, we have made the greatest strides in using a road grader with automated controls. The new technology increases productivity by 50 per cent. At the same time, the layer precision and the long-term characteristics of the structures improve. This means that the road will last longer even though less material will be used - says Dr Rauno Heikkilä, the head of the research at Oulu University.
Several research institutes and companies are involved in the EUR 2 - 3 million Intelligent Road Construction project.
